Chapter 16 The Naked Truth

Darrel fiddled with his collar, sweating from the humidity, and peered with blinking eyes from the dark dance hall into the bright autumn afternoon. He held open the door to The Watering Hole and watched his officers in dark uniforms: Colby Chumbly, Jim Franklin, Esmeralda Aryiola Sylvestine-Vallejo, and young Bradley Norton, in their shiny jump boots crunching their way across the gravel parking lot as they joined him. He nodded to each officer as they passed into the shadowy recesses of the old tin saloon that sat down on the south end of town on the shores of Blackwater Lake.

“Hey, hey how’s it going?” Darrel offered them.

Colby stepped past Darrel and looked up and around at the dark saloon and pushed out his lower lip. “Looks like they got the ol’ place back together.”

Jim nodded, turning and ran an eye over the dark interior, inspecting the place. “Yeah, heard the roof was practically gone.”

Each one smiled or dipped their head in passing. The ones wearing department baseball caps took them off. Darrel followed the officers across the big saloon and around the tables. Peanut shells cracked under their boots. Darrel glanced up once at the huge, mounted boar’s head on the wall over the bar where the neon lights for beer flashed in the long mirror below it. Darrel’s mouth drew down because it felt like the boar’s black eyes watched him. He pocketed the keys, mentally noting to return them to Dewayne and Sue Terrell with a thanks for letting them meet here. He blew out a breath to steady himself.

All he could think about was BC’s description of the skeletal ghosts advancing on him back at the sanatorium. Just like Jasmine La Port, BC had said, the ghosts he encountered in the sanatorium could interact and affect the physical world. BC described to Darrel, Harvey, and Tess, the horror of being grabbed by boney fingers of zombie like patients that pulled on his uniform trying to take him up the stairs, and him kicking his boots all the way. Only when he became angry and the blue lines of energy appeared upon his skin, did they squeal and fly away, and some of the ghosts burst into whips of energy – like cob webs only to reform again– and menace him as he scrambled for the body of the real-estate agent. BC showed them the angry red whelps on the back and neck he got from the ghosts flying around the sanatorium and clawing him. The huge structure trembled and that was when great winds seemed to exhale and blast BC and the body out the front door. Darrel grimaced, as he followed after the other officers, wondering how on Earth BC thought a lecture could prepare anyone for the supernatural.

Darrel blinked as he realized the boys were saying something to him as they came to a stop at the last of the tables near the dance area and stage. BC, Harvey, and Tess stood waiting with some equipment – the projector and a screen.
